Dorothy B. Silvius

1912 – 2009

DURHAM- Dorothy Brown Silvius 97, of Pinkham Brook Road, Durham, died Friday, Sept. 11.

She was born in Pownal on June 20, 1912, a daughter of the late William Albert and Mary Blanche (Bangs) Brown. She was educated in Pownal, graduated from Freeport High School, class of 1930, as valedictorian, then later graduated from Farmington Normal School in 1933.


Dorothy married the love of her life, Paul Silvius, on June 20, 1936, in Auburn. He predeceased her in 2007. She was an Elementary teacher for many years in Durham and later taught in Pownal and Lisbon Falls. She was proud to have taught Steven King in elementary school. Dorothy was a member of Shiloh Chapel and the Maine Teachers Association. She enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, motorcycling, traveling to Florida, reading, puzzles, knitting and playing games.


She leaves three daughters, Helen Lord of Durham and her companion, Fred Lyman, of Harpswell, Priscilla Higgins and her husband, Andrew, of Durham and Paulina Carr and her husband, Rodney, of Durham; 7seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by an infant son, Paul W. Silvius; a grandson, Steven Lord; five sisters and three brothers.
