LEWISTON — Police arrested a Lewiston man Monday afternoon in connection with a stabbing that occurred near Kennedy Park just before noon.

Taironce Nelson, 28, of 125 Pine St., was charged at 2:38 p.m. with one count of aggravated assault in connection with the stabbing that ended with one man being taken to the hospital.

One man was taken by ambulance to the hospital with a stab wound to the left side of the chest and one person was in custody, Lewiston Police Chief Michael Bussiere said at the scene near the intersection of Walnut and Bates streets.

Bussiere said an on-duty Lewiston police detective witnessed part of the altercation, reported it and called for help.

Police were looking for the weapon used and had cordoned off sections of both streets and were canvassing the park looking at the grass.

Police were also interviewing people in the park. One woman, who only identified herself as the neighbor of the victim, said his name was “Jason” but she didn’t know his last name. Police later confirmed that Nelson is to have no contact with Jason York, who was treated and released at Central Maine Medical Center on Monday afternoon.

Bussiere said the man’s wound appeared to be non life-threatening.
