Augustine ‘Gus’ Capponi
1926 – 2009
WILLISTON, Vt. — Augustine “Gus” Capponi, 82, died on Monday, Sept. 14, at the Vermont Respite House.
Gus was born on Dec. 14, 1926, in Rumford, the son of Felix and Grace (Jannace) Capponi.
At the early age of 12, he began working as a stone mason, which he continued for more than 40 years. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked with the Seabees.
He later worked at Weeks School in Vergennes, Vt., and for IBM for more than 20 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking and being a member of the Elks.
He is survived by his children, Augustine Capponi Jr. of Alburg, Vt., Andrew Capponi and wife, Jacqueline, of Milton, Vt., Sheryl Briggs and husband, Richard, of Mexico, Peter Capponi and wife, Sharon, of South Rumford, Joseph Capponi of Brewer, Lisa Deavitt and husband, Karl, of Georgia, Vt., Tonia Booska of Milton, Vt., and Travis Capponi of Colchester, Vt.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; his brothers, John Capponi Sr. of Maine, and Frank Capponi of Connecticut; and sisters, Madeline Libby of Maine, and Vera McLean of Connecticut.
