It may have been a breach of political etiquette when Rep. Joe Wilson yelled “You lie” during President Barack Obama’s health care speech before Congress last Wednesday.
The editorial board chastised Rep. Wilson in their column, “Cleaning out the inbox” on Saturday, saying Obama wasn’t lying. However, this outburst evidently served a good purpose as elsewhere in this same issue of the paper is an article “Health talks focus on illegals.” After Obama’s speech the issue of illegal immigrants is being revisited to make sure there would be enforcement for people to have valid social security numbers before getting government subsidized health care. So perhaps Joe had a point.
I do not believe Obama lied intentionally. He believes whatever is on his teleprompter. However, in regards to the health care issue, many of his statements do not tell the whole story or obfuscates the facts. And in fairness the President has often called his critics liars.
So let’s cut Rep. Wilson a little slack. He has said he is sorry he said it. The issue of who can receive government subsidized health care is in the spotlight, a good thing. Let the voters decide.
