George A. Bemis, who is at present superintendent of the district of Brookfield, R.I., was last night elected superintendent of the Lewiston schools at a salary of $2,000. He will be unable to come here for two or three weeks and during that time Dr. Wiseman and D. J. Callahan, who have been in charge, will continue their work.
•George Curtis of Auburn who started out early in the spring to walk across the continent, has reached his destination, Portland, Oregon, having covered 3,740 miles in 133 days, an average of 28 miles a day.
50 years ago, 1959
Miss Maine will get a note from the Lewiston Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
The board last night voted to send Linda Mills of Lewiston a note commending her on her fine showing at last week’s Miss America pageant at Atlantic City, N. J. Council president Alphee L. Nadeau made the suggestion.
One councilman suggested that the note also include an invitation to her to attend a session of the aldermen some night.

Lewiston’s historical landmarks, downtown area and mills will be the backdrop Saturday for the city’s first Mill Festival.
A mini-exposition representing the industries that have changed the Lewiston-Auburn economy will highlight the day along with demonstrations, music, magic, puppets and athletics.
With downtown Lisbon Street closed to traffic, events will be held at Androscoggin Bank, the Lisbon-Park streets walkway and Peoples Bank.
