RANGELEY — Firefighters rescued a boater on Rangeley Lake on Tuesday
night after the two engines quit on the way back to shore, Rangeley
Fire/Rescue Department Chief Rudy Davis said Wednesday.
Gerry Hamlin, whose address was unknown, had a large outboard
motor quit on him and then a 9 horsepower outboard do the same, Davis said.
Residents on Mercer Circle reported the stranded boat after seeing
what they thought was someone signaling for help by morse code, Davis
said. Firefighters were called at 7:59 p.m.
Davis said he sent out firefighter Harold Schaetzle, who owns
Lakeside Convenience, which rents boats and has a dock, because he was
the closest to the scene. Schaetzle took a pontoon boat out while
firefighters used the department’s boat.
The 17-foot Lund craft was towed in from near Manor Point, which is about a half-mile out, Davis said.
