100 years ago, 1909

Pretending that he was going to marry Teresa Kida, a Polish servant in a well-known Lewiston man’s house, John Plahta, also Polish, is said to have persuaded the woman to make over to him her bank book on which there were deposits for about $700 and then left her. The matter has been reported to the police but the man has left the city and his whereabouts are unknown.

50 years ago, 1959

The panelists on Gary Moore’s “I’ve Got A Secret” television show were stumped last night by the eight children of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred E. Dulac Jr. of Lewiston who attend Holy Family Parochial School.

Their secret was that there is one of them in each grade at the school.

In addition to winning money, it was announced that the show would present a couple of new outfits of clothes to each child.

The program contacted the family — there are 13 children in all — after the child-a-grade-oddity was reported in the Sun.

25 years ago, 1984

After posting its best record ever in 1983, the Bates College woman’s soccer team seems poised to move into the sport’s upper echelon in New England.

The Bobcats of coach Diane Boettcher will get an early idea of what the new season holds as they open their season today, at home, against St. Michael’s and host Middlebury on Saturday.
