BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) – Former President George H.W. Bush says his mother might not approve of a statue honoring him at the University of New England. Bush joked that she might think the pose, with him looking skyward, shows a lack of modesty that she insisted her children show.

The statue, created by sculptor John Andelin of Williston, N.D., was unveiled Thursday at the George and Barbara Bush Center on the campus in Biddeford, Maine. Andelin told the Portland Press Herald that he was going for a look that showed the 41st president to be “visionary and optimistic.”

Bush has homes in Maine and Texas. Andelin says he’s in talks with Bush’s presidential library in Texas about creating a statue of George and Barbara Bush to be displayed there.
