The annual pilgrimage of the French residents of the city to the cemetery on the Switzerland Road was held yesterday and as usual a large number of people visited the place. The St. Cecelia band played a funeral march and a memorial sermon was delivered.
50 years ago, 1959
The Lewiston Fire Department and Public Works Department are engaging in a cold war over some spilled trash in Lisbon Street Alley. Fire Inspector Aldorian Landry has declared the trash and waste a fire hazard and asked the PWD to pick it up. The PWD said it will pick up only the trash placed in containers in line with its regular policy. In regards to some piles of broken furniture also left in the alley, the PWD said it will have to wait for October when the department’s regular fall clean-up campaign starts.

Ronald Beauchesne, president of Northeast Bank’s Central Maine Division, has been selected treasurer of the Committee for the University of Maine at Lewiston-Auburn. Committee Chairman James B. Longley Jr. said Beauchesne will be registering the committee with city clerks in Lewiston and Auburn as part of the campaign.
The committee is working for the passage of bond issue questions in which voters in Lewiston and Auburn will be asked to contribute to a total of $3.1 million towards a new $5.1 million UM campus to be located in Lewiston.
