PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – The Portland City Hall clock tower may be old, but it’s still running. And it’s running fast.
People who work in Maine’s largest city are learning that the hourly chime isn’t always precisely on the hour, and they may simply have to get used to it.
Freeport-based Balzer Family Clock Works is responsible for maintaining the clock. Rick Balzer tells the Portland Press Herald that pendulum clocks like the one at City Hall need periodic adjustment, but he says moisture problems are making for more frequent adjustments.
The dials were removed in 2006 during the $1.8 million restoration of the clock tower and parapets. Changes were made but moisture remained a problem after they were put back in place in 2007.
