Lawrence ‘Larry’ A. Nadeau

1924 – 2009
AUBURN — Dr. Lawrence “Larry” A. Nadeau, 84, of Lewiston and Litchfield, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 17, surrounded by his family at the Hospice House.
He was born in Lewiston, Sept. 30, 1924, the son of Alfred and Cora (Lamontagne) Nadeau. He was educated in Lewiston schools and was a 1941 graduate of Lewiston High School. He continued his education and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1949, and graduated from Tufts University Medical School in 1953. He completed five years of residency at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, Mass., and the Veterans’ Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Mass., which was one year of internship, one year of residency, and three years of radiology.
This prepared him for a distinguished career as a radiologist in his hometown serving his community for more than 30 years at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. It was there during his service to the Sisters of Charity that he served as president of St. Mary’s medical staff.
His professional recognitions included being a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. He was a member of the New England Roentgen Ray Society, former president of the Maine Radiological Society, member of the American and Maine Medical Associations, a member of the Androscoggin Medical Society. He was a 20 year participant in the Harvard Study, and was certified to practice medicine until his death.
He was on the leading edge of preventive medicine and promoted the importance of mammography for all women.
Larry was a nature lover. His hobbies included birding and identifying wild flowers. He was a member of the Stanton Bird Club for more than 20 years becoming an honorary director and life member. He also owned a tree farm in Minot.
He was a member of the Lewiston Auburn Camera Club and won several ribbons for his nature photography.
He loved his home on Cobbosseecontee Lake where he was an avid bass fisherman. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren to fish, hike, and make model rockets. Together with his wife, Muriel, they enjoyed many trips to Marco Island, Fla.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, the former Muriel D.Goulet; their four children, Michael L. Nadeau and his companion, Jean Domaingue, Gisele M. Nadeau and her companion, Ronald W. Cotton, Rachel Nadeau Lutts and her husband, Robert T. Lutts and Daniel R. Nadeau and his wife, Donna Ceglia; and five grandchildren, Jeremy M. Nadeau, Jonathan T. Nadeau, Peter N. Lutts, Madeleine G. Lutts and Philip R. Lutts.
Dr. Nadeau’s family would like to send their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Roger Austin, the staff, and volunteers at the Hospice House and Androscoggin Home Care for their compassion and caring during this difficult time.
