AUBURN – One big play and score might have changed everything Friday night for the Edward Little football team, but the sudden momentum swing went the other way.
With the Red Eddies knocking on the door and threatening to score, EL had the chance to trim the Witches lead to within a touchdown. EL got as close as the 28 but its drive stalled. A few plays later, Brewer’s Pat McEwen broke a 50-yard run, and the Witches finished off EL for a 38-26 victory at Walton Field.
“That was a big swing,” said Brewer coach Don Farnham. “We knew at halftime that Edward Little is a proud program, and that they were going to come at us. They did. They didn’t throw it as much. They came after us and tried to punch us in the mouth. They started to come back.”
EL (0-3) had a disastrous opening quarter, allowing 24 points, but the Red Eddies battled back and get within reach. EL coach Darren Hartley was unavailable for comment following the game.
“It feels great,” said Brewer back Jaime Williamson, who scored four touchdowns for the Witches. “We struggled the first two games. Being a senior, I didn’t want to lose every game. It feels great to see the scoreboard in our favor.”
Williams finished with 223 yards on 19 carries while McEwen added two touchdowns and 168 yards on 12 carries. The Brewer running game totalled 436 yards.
“We’re a double wing offense,” said Farnham. “We had three backs going at them. Jaime had a great game and Patrick did too. The blocking we had up front, you’ve got to give them credit.”
EL got 144 yards rushing on 17 carries from quarterback Teven Colon. He scored a touchdown while Brandon Vye scored three touchdowns and rushed for 107 yards on 20 carries.
Brewer (1-2) built a 24-0 lead by scoring on its first two possessions. McEwen scored from 24 yards out while Williamson added a 53-yard run. After an EL fumble on a kickoff, Williamson converted from the 4 for a 18-0 lead. He added a 67-yard scamper with 2:32 left in the quarter.
“I can’t thank my line enough,” said Williamson. “They were opening up holes. I wouldn’t have been able to do anything without them.”
EL got on the board in the second when Vye scored from the 2 with 8:49 left in the half. Williamson made it 31-6 when he recovered a fumble and returned it 35 yards with 4:14 left in the half.
“It’s not to say we haven’t come out slow in the past, but that went our way tonight,” said Farnham of his club’s strong start.
Colon scored on an 11-yard run late in the half and then Vye scored with 7:27 left from the 11 to get EL within 31-20 on its first possession. After stopping Brewer, EL had the chance to get closer but the drive was hampered by an injury to Colon. After he missed a third-and-long play, he returned but was stopped on a short rush, and Brewer took over at the 28. McEwen took it home from the 50 four players later.
“I knew they were going to comeback,” said Williamson. “They were going to have a great second half, but I had confidence in my defense. We have a strong defense, and knew we could plow them back, and we did. We held them off.”
Vye added a touchdown early in the fourth, and threatened again with a fumble recovery on the kickoff, but Brewer stopped EL on fourth down at the 21.
