Kudos to the Sun Journal for your great article titled “Eating Better” on Monday Sept. 14! And kudos to the Auburn school system and the Auburn School Nutrition Program for taking this initiative.

It was a delight to hear that a new healthy menu is being offered. And to see the students accepting and welcoming the changes is enlightening.

I have been in food service business nearly 30 years and know the difficulties school lunch programs face when trying to make these changes. Typically, healthier food means higher cost, and we all know the resistance that brings. What amazes me is that they can still offer a hot lunch for $1.50. My oldest son started in the Auburn school system in 1990 and I think we only paid $1 then. To think that the cost to parents has only gone up 50 cents in that time is beyond belief. It’s pretty hard to even pack a nutritious cold lunch for that.

Hats off to Director Paula Rouillard for her work in getting this accomplished. Certainly more K-8 lunch programs will follow suit. Nicely done!
