WINTHROP — Once Monday afternoon’s Mountain Valley Conference field hockey showdown went to 7-on-7, Winthrop High School felt comfortable with the prospects for win No. 7.
“We’re really good at passing, and we’re really fast. And we won another overtime game against Mountain Valley,” said Winthrop senior Kenzie Hill. “It’s just our speed. We can pass and dribble around people.”
Or get to rebounds in front of people, as Nikki Scott did before assisting Hill’s game-winner less than two minutes into the extra session, propelling undefeated Winthrop past Livermore Falls, 4-3.
Scott pounced on a loose ball in front after Livermore Falls goalkeeper Caylee Morris initially denied Kelsey Ouellette’s long-range bid.
There was a brief hiccup in the post-game celebration when one of two officials initially signaled no goal. After a brief conference, Hill’s score was upheld and the Ramblers exulted in their biggest win to date of what so far has been a dream season.
“We just get really intense, especially because we haven’t lost,” Ouellette said. “We want to keep that going.”
Intense was a mild description of a second half that saw both teams awake from a pedestrian start with three goals each.
Annika Durrell assisted back-to-back goals by Kathryn Ventrella and Hannah Therrien in a span of just over two minutes to give the Andies a 3-2 lead with 3:26 remaining in regulation.
Winthrop landed the equalizer with 2:34 left. Morris (14 saves) kicked out a try by Scott before freshman Mary Claire Blanchard found the back of the cage.
“When they scored twice after we did to take the lead, it was like, ‘No, that’s not going to happen,'” said Winthrop halfback Lauren McHatten.
“We picked up the intensity every time,” added Hill, “but they kept one-upping us. They just kept coming back. We were very nervous about playing this team.”
Livermore Falls (6-2) was left lamenting two whistles in the brief overtime stanza.
Prior to the uncertainty of the game-ending goal, the Andies also lost out on a potential breakaway bid when the official trailing the play ruled that Sam Greenwood gained possession by virtue of a push-off.
“I didn’t see that at all,” said Livermore Falls coach Julia Parker, adding that she didn’t get a conclusive answer to her question about the Ramblers’ winning goal. “They just shook their heads at me. It was a tough loss. I feel like the girls won it. I’m frustrated right now, but I think the girls played really well. You can’t take that away from them.”
Seven seniors suit up for the Ramblers, and five were on the field during OT.
Freshman Jessica Scott held the fort defensively during the bonus session, however. Together with classmate Shauna Carlson, Scott helped keep the explosive Andies in check until the closing minutes of regulation.
McHatten’s work in the midfield also triggered multiple Winthrop scoring runs.
“They’re just fast. The girls who played in the 7-on-7 played the whole 60 minutes,” said Winthrop coach Sharon Coulton. “They showed up for preseason in good shape, and we’ve made a focus of maintaining that throughout the season.”
Ventrella scored two goals, her 14th and 15th of the season, for the Andies. Nikki Scott and Ouellette scored the first two goals for Winthrop, with Scott finally breaking the scoreless tie in the sixth minute after intermission.
Senior Katie Michelsen made nine saves in the Winthrop cage.
