NORWAY — Stone-Smart Unit 82, American Legion, Auxiliary met Sept. 9 with President Thelma Denlinger presiding.

Opening prayer was said by Chaplain Christine Weiss.

Denlinger noted that at a picnic meeting in July, members voted to help with the new roof for the hall. On a motion by Joyce Clifford, members voted to donate up to $5,000 to the post, depending on cost.

Ellen Snow reported that she has donated baby items, small children’s items and sports items to community service projects for needy families and individuals, with an estimated value of $3,240.

Secretary Joyce Clifford read two thank you notes from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School seniors for their awards at graduation.

Clifford reported unit awards received at the Department Convention in June: a first place plaque for outstanding Americanism program, a Silver Award for outstanding work in education, Certificates of Appreciation for outstanding work for community service, Americanism, public relations, veterans affairs and rehabilitation, veterans affairs and voluntary services, poppy display, Western Maine’s Veterans Home, home service and history report.

Rose Moulton reported that the post and unit’s yard sale did well.

Americanism Chairwoman Barbara Henley reported that in June she asked second graders to make cards which she would send to service personnel overseas. She got 69 cards and mailed them with a box of goodies. Henley stated that she would visit the school at least four times.

Members voted a donation to the Norway Fireman’s Relief Fund and voted to purchase two swivel flags for Main Street for the Post Americanism Officer Randy Henley.

Henley reported on the Pocket Flag Project. The folded flags are sent to military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan with a card for each person with the unit name and address. The unit will cut out and fold 300 flags and Lucille Allen will write the message on the cards.

The unit voted to hold a Christmas sale on Dec. 5 to help community residents, with no item more than $10. Tables will be available to rent for crafters, the unit will have a food sale, a homemade candy sale and a white elephant sale with items suitable for regiving. More information forthcoming in October.

Serving on the committee are Joyce Clifford, Rose Moulton, Barbara Henley, Eleanor Durant, Ellen Snow and Theresa Dodge.

Marjy Sessions has retired after many years in the Monday night bingo kitchen.

The unit will host the Department President and Second District President in November. Other units attending will be Oxford, South Paris, Buckfield and West Paris.

Unit members, along with VFW members, gathered at Norway Memorial Park on Sept. 11 to wave flags.
