AUBURN — Looks really can be deceiving.
If you watched the St. Dom’s boys’ soccer team during warm-ups Monday, you might have thought the Saints looked a bit too lackadaisical. The second-seeded Wiscasset team was in town to take on the top-ranked Saints, but St. Dom’s looked pretty relaxed for an emotional battle between two of the top teams in Western C.
That laid back appearance didn’t carry over into the the game, though. The Saints responded convincingly, scoring twice in the first four minutes on their way to blanking the Redskins 6-0.
“We did start in warm-ups kind of flat,” said junior midfielder Kurt Johnson. “We knew when it was game time that we had to get intense and play really hard and we did that.”
Johnson and Alex Parker each produced three goals as the Saints (6-0) remained unbeaten. St. Dom’s outshot Wiscasset (4-2-1) 28-7 in the game, and 17-3 in the first half.
“We knew that they’re a talented team,” St. Dom’s assistant coach Marty Bressler said. Bressler was filling in for head coach Matt Erickson, who is out of state. “They were 4-1-1 before the game. They’re disciplined and well-coached. We knew that we had to step up and be aggressive. I’m very happy with the players. They executed what they had to. They never let up.”
The Saints made scoring look pretty easy when Johnson headed home a cross from Jack Erickson just 2:07 into the game. It was St. Dom’s second shot of the game.
“We knew these guys were going to be better than team’s we’ve faced before,” said Johnson. “To get a goal that early was good for our confidence, and we could build off that.”
With 3:50 gone in the game, Parker got his first of the game. Wiscasset keeper Mason Brewer came out of the net but mishandled the ball. When he tried to retreat to the goal, he collided with a teammate, leaving the net open for Parker.
Johnson made it 3-0 at 10:46. He put in a rebound of a Parker shot. Then with 1:24 left in the half, Parker netted his second when his shot deflected in off Brewer.
“Kurt Johnson played absolutely phenomenal as a junior,” said Bressler.”He’s showed a lot of growth in the last year.”
Johnson finished off his first career hat trick 5:33 into the second half. Parker had a shot hit a defender and bounce off the left post. Johnson was there to steer the loose ball into the net.
“It felt pretty good,” said Johnson. “It was pretty lucky. I got the rebound off the post. Luckily, it was right there at my foot, and I just put it in.”
Parker added his third with 6:12 left in the half.
Brewer finished with 17 saves in a strong outing for Wiscasset. St. Dom’s keeper Nick Brigham saw more action in the second half as the Redskin regulars played against the Saints bench, comprised of mostly underclassmen. He made a diving save on a Ashton Benn shot and Kyle Hargreaves managed to kick the ball out of the goalmouth.
“We know we’ve got to play them at Wiscasset,” said Bressler. “They’re going to be better prepared. They’ve seen us already. We’re going to have to come out again and just stay with our game.”
