HARRISON — School officials say three more tests were taken at the Harrison Elementary School well Monday to determine whether the water was still contaminated.

“The state requires we do five tests to validate,” Facilities Director Dave Marshall said. Results of Monday’s test are expected back on Wednesday.

Students at the school have been drinking bottled water as a precautionary measure since the start of school after coliform bacteria was found in four of five water samples tested on Aug. 24. Four samples taken on Aug. 11 at the school all came back negative, Marshall said.

Repeated tests have shown contamination until Friday when two tests on the well water came back negative for coliform bacteria. Now three more tests must come back negative to consider the water clean, he said. Until that time, school officials say students will continue to drink bottled water.

Marshall told the Oxford Hills School District Board of Directors on Monday that the amount of coliform bacteria found in the water would not even have registered as a violation under Maine Department of Environmental Protection regulations 10 years ago.
