For nine consecutive days the Lewiston Fire Department has been trying to put out a stubborn, underground blaze in a big dump on the banks of Stetson Brook behind the fairgrounds.

But, the end may be near. Yesterday Fire Chief Roland G. Dumais sent out a new piece of ammunition to fight with, and early results were encouraging.

The chief has purchased a bayonet applicator for $40. It has a sharp end capable of piercing wood, with it the LFD can really get down to the root of the trouble. The nozzle is driven down through the pieces of lumber and other junk enabling firemen to get the water where it is most needed.

Old antagonists will get together Wednesday when members of the Lewiston City Council visit the School Committee.

Meeting at Lewiston Junior High School, the committee will also get its first look at the yet-to-be completed LJHS cafeteria and will elect a new chairman to replace Katherine Rando, who has resigned from the committee.

In recent weeks, the committee has defied the council by seeking to hire its own attorney and overturn parts of the City Charter.
