Beryl S. Emerson
1915 – 2009
DANVERS, Mass. — Beryl S. Emerson, 94, a longtime resident of Livermore Falls, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, after a brief illness at the Kaplan Hospice House, surrounded by her loving family. Prior to her hospitalization in Massachusetts, she resided for 10 years at Schooner Estates in Auburn.
She was born in Jay, July 4, 1915, the daughter of Parke and Myra (Foley) Smith. She was a 1932 graduate of Jay High School. She earned a degree in nursing from St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston and worked for many years as a registered nurse.
She was the beloved wife of the late George B. Emerson Jr. of Livermore, whom she married on June 24, 1940. She and her husband owned and operated Camp Phoenix fishing camps on Nesowadnehunk Lake in northern Maine. The couple enjoyed traveling and visited 49 of the 50 states in the United States and also several provinces of Canada. She and George joyfully wintered in Florida for 25 years.
She was a former member of the Eaton Memorial United Methodist Church of Livermore Falls. She had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star, where she served as worthy grand matron and was also a member of the Charity Rebekah’s Lodge No. 6 of Livermore Falls.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda E. Shea of Wenham, Mass.; a son, Peter K. Emerson of Calhoun, Tenn.; a sister, Alberta Galusha of Jay; a sister-in-law, Patricia Callaway of Auburn; six grandchildren, Thomas E. Shea III, Julie Anne DeJoy, Maire Lee Webster, Stephen E. Shea, Elizabeth E. Selvage and George B. Emerson III; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Donavon and Arnold Smith; two sisters, Muriel Purrington and Genevieve Wellman; and a son-in-law, Thomas E. Shea, M.D.
