PORTLAND — The Maine Cancer Foundation’s Pink Tulip Project is looking for new volunteers to organize gardens and get digging. Whether to honor a specific person or just to help raise cancer awareness locally, a Pink Tulip Project garden is a great way to beautify a community while raising funds for research.

Now in its fourth year, the Pink Tulip Project will be signing up new gardens until Thursday, Oct. 1. Currently, more than 30,000 pink tulip bulbs are scheduled to be planted during the official planting week of Oct. 19. Hundreds of volunteers are ready to help plant more than 70 gardens all over the state, from Portland to Millinocket.

“Volunteering to plant a Pink Tulip Garden gives everyone a chance to participate in their area no matter where they are,” said the founder of the project, Robin Whitten. “This can be a terrific community building event and wonderful for schools, community service organizations and cancer support groups, too.”

All the tools new gardeners need to set up an official project garden are available at www.pinktulipproject.org. Gardeners will find information about starting a garden, fundraising and promoting the garden. Donations to the individual gardens, as well as the project itself, can also be made on the secure site.

Last year, the project raised more than $50,000 for cancer research grants given through the Women’s Cancer Fund of the Maine Cancer Foundation. The Pink Tulip Project has raised almost $120,000 for the fund over the last four years.
