LEWISTON — Well, that just figures. Just months before he is to retire after a 40-year career, Finance Director Richard T. Metivier was given a giant plaque to carry around for the remainder of his time with the city.
At a surprise ceremony Thursday night, Metivier was named the 2009 Employee of the Year.
As is often the case, Metivier was the last to know. He thought he was there simply to clap dutifully as some basic service awards were handed out.
“When it was announced, all of his children and their spouses and his grandchildren came out,” said Community Relations Director Dottie Perham-Whittier. “He didn’t know it was coming.”
Acting City Administrator Philip Nadeau made the announcement, touting Metivier as a “highly valued and respected member of the city team.”
Metivier began his employment with the city in 1969 as assistant controller. He was promoted to finance director in 1980.
“Dick is a very committed public servant with outstanding performance,” said Human Resources Director Denis Jean. “His knowledge, professionalism and integrity serve the city of Lewiston extremely well, and his work as a dedicated employee continues to be greatly appreciated.”
Suddenly surrounded by his family and accepting the award, Metivier said: “The success I’ve experienced in my career is due to the people I have surrounded myself with.”
He is set to retire in February 2010.
