LEWISTON — One thing of which the Lewiston Maineiacs are sure is that the Montreal Junior have goaltending.

Plenty of goaltending.

Beyond that, the Junior — who are beginning their second season in Verdun, a suburb of Quebec’s largest city — have a roster chock full of unknowns, not unlike the Lewiston Maineiacs themselves.

“We’re taking the same approach to every game all year long, no matter who we’re playing,” Maineiacs’ coach Don MacAdam said. “A few things are significant going into there. A number of our players are from there, that could be good or bad. But I want to go back to how we play. We’re an excellent skating team, and we can skate with anybody. If we can skate with anybody, we have a chance to win.”

To leave the one-game trip to Montreal with a victory, the Maineiacs are going to have to go through St. Louis Blues prospect Jake Allen, considered one of the top goaltending prospects in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

“We certainly know Jake,” MacAdam said. “He’s a top-notch goalie and we’re going to have to work hard to beat him, if that’s who we face.”

The other option the Junior have in the cage is Jean-Francois Berube, who was drafted this past June by the Los Angeles Kings. Common speculation is that one of the pair — likely Allen — will be on the move at this year’s mid-season trade deadline. but for now, both remain a possibility to play this weekend.

After a day off Saturday, Lewiston resumes its home schedule with a rematch against Chicoutimi. Lewiston opened the season with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Sagueneens on the road.

“They likely felt they deserved a better fate,” MacAdam said. “We can assume they’re going to start a heck of a lot harder than they did in their home-opener. Home-openers can be distracting. You get out on the road, no more distractions. We like their team, their 16-year-old goalie (Frenchman Robin Gusse) played great and they’ll likely have a more experienced lineup against us.”

Speaking of more experience, the Maineiacs will finally play with a full lineup this weekend. Both Sam Carrier and Zach Shannon, who did not play last Saturday after suffering injuries the previous night, participated fully in practice Thursday and will play this weekend. In addition, defenseman Eric Gelinas will likely join the club in Montreal on Friday night. He participated in the New Jersey Devils’ morning skate Thursday, and he was then released back to Lewiston early Thursday afternoon, according to the Devils’ official Web site.

The Maineiacs’ game in Montreal on Friday is scheduled for 7:35 p.m., with the Sunday home matinee set for 4 p.m.
