WINTHROP — Livermore Falls’ running game was in high gear Friday night. The Andies opened the throttle early and didn’t let up to the tune of 480 yards rushing as they ran away from the Winthrop Ramblers in a 58-14 dismantling of their Campbell Conference foe.
Nothing the Ramblers tried could stop the Andies’ running attack. Fourteen of the Andies’ 50 runs went for 10 or more yards. They averaged 9.6 yards per carry.
Halfback Jeff Ryder took a pitch from quarterback Shawn Whiting and raced 72 yards down the right sideline on the first offensive play of the game for the Andies. He would finish with 171 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Teammate Chandler White turned in an even bigger night, racking up 204 yards rushing to go along with 60 yards receiving. He also scored twice.
“I’m seeing some good holes and I’m just reading my blocks,” said White. “It’s been a lot of hard work, but it’s coming together now.”
The Ramblers (2-2) found themselves down two quick touchdowns and things continued to go downhill for the home team. On the first play after Ryder’s long scoring run, Andies’ defensive tackle Dillon Newcomb popped the ball loose from running back Ryan Conant (13 carries for 96 yards). Whiting scooped up the fumble at the Rambler 31 and raced the distance to put the Andies (4-0) up 14-0 less than four minutes into the game.
The Andies tacked up two more touchdowns in the second quarter. White culminated a nine-play, 66-yard drive with a 9-yard score. On the drive, the Andies showcased their running depth as Alex Rose banged out runs of 21 and 23 yards.
Before the end of the half, the visitors churned out an 82-yard drive with White picking up runs of 19 and 26 yards sandwiched around a 20-yard reception. His 4-yard scoring burst up the middle capped the drive and the Andies went to the halftime break up 28-0 with 237 yards rushing on the stat sheet.
“We just keep it simple,” said Livermore Falls coach Brad Bishop. “We don’t get too far ahead of ourselves and (our running game) usually works.”
Any thoughts of a gallant comeback by the Ramblers were quashed on the opening drive of the third quarter. A quick, five-play drive with Ryder zipping around the right side for a 49-yard score put an end to those thoughts.
“They punched us in the mouth early and kept punching,” said Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton. “We tried a six-man front and then went to a five-man front, but it didn’t take long for them to find the creases.”
Whiting kept the ball himself for a 6-yard touchdown and Tommy Lee scored twice to complete the scoring for the Andies. Quarterback Travis Luce had a 2-yard sneak for one of the Ramblers’ two touchdowns. Junior Joey Brennan had the other when he returned a fourth-quarter kick off 70 yards for a score.
