Morelia Candia holds a baby alpaca for Rhiannah Landry, 3, to pet at Andes Alpaca Farm in Auburn on Sunday. Candia’s farm was one of 37 Maine alpaca farms that opened their doors to the public during the Maine Alpaca Association Open Farm Weekend. Candia and her husband Gil have been raising Huacaya alpacas since 1999 for a source of “very warm fiber” and for breading stock. Eleven baby alpacas have been born on the farm this September and Candia is expecting one more to be born in October. About 80 percent of the world’s alpaca population is in Peru, Candia said. Landry of Auburn visited the farm with her grandparents, Jackie and Don Caron, background, of Minot, and her 6-year-old sister, Savannah.
