PORTER — One man was killed and another taken to the hospital following an early morning one-car accident that closed Route 25 in Porter for several hours.
Zachary Kruczek, 25, of Denmark, was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday morning after the car he was driving went airborne and rolled over after hitting an embankment about one-half mile west of Porter. His passenger, 20-year-old Jared Eastman, of Porter, was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition Sunday evening.
Deputy Chris Davis, of the Oxford County Sheriff’s, said that the crash occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Kruczek was eastbound on Route 25, driving a 2003 Ford Focus, when he failed to negotiate a curve. Davis said that Kruczek’s car skidded across the road into the oncoming lane, hit an embankment and then went airborne before rolling over and coming to rest on its top. It was not clear whether or not Kruczek was thrown from the vehicle or wearing a seat belt.
Davis said that the crash is still under investigation, and that a crash reconstruction team from Oxford County is being assisted by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. He said authorities believe that speed was a factor in the crash. It was not known where the two men were coming from or headed to as of Sunday evening, and Davis said he would be conducting several interviews this week.
Davis said that Sunday’s rainy weather had not started as of the time of the accident and that the road was dry.
