POLAND — Baton twirlers from several Maine teams gathered on Aug. 4, 5 and 6 for Twirl Camp at Poland Community School.

Hosted by Panther Pride and Paris Twirlers coach MaryEllen Baizley, the event drew beginner twirlers as well as seasoned, individual champions. Expert coaches such as Donna Landry from Gymnastics Plus, Stephanie Hatfield from ABCs School of Dance and Nikki Pratt from Poland Recreation joined U.S. Twirling Association judges to offer a variety of sessions, including solo, baton and pom-pom. Participants twirled, danced and crafted together. There were games, snacks and door prizes.

Baton twirling has gained recent popularity in Maine. Local teams march in parades, perform in community shows and compete as part of the Maine Baton Twirling Council.

Oxford Hills Majorettes teams are accepting new members and classes will begin in September. For details or to find a local baton twirling team, visit www.paristwirlers.com or e-mail Baizley at [email protected].
