WALES — Oak Hill High School doesn’t intend to make an October mountain out of this September molehill in boys’ soccer.
The Raiders’ brief case of heartburn has been inflicted by the red meat of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B schedule. Three consecutive losses, including Monday’s 3-0 blanking at the feet of Camden Hills, have quelled the euphoria of a six-game winning streak to open the season.
Camden Hills and Maranacook, which dealt Oak Hill a 1-0 defeat to start the skid last week, are the top-ranked teams in the East and West, respectively.
“This is a team that’s been together for two years. We still think we’re pretty good,” said Oak Hill coach Joe Fletcher. “That’s the best team we’ve played. They come at you in waves. They’re skilled, strong and aggressive. We’ve had some success against them. We beat them two of the last three times. But they got us pretty good today.”
Oak Hill needed a quick start to regain their confidence and give the Windjammers (9-1) food for thought.
Henry Marchetti, Camden Hills’ senior captain aand midfielder, didn’t cooperate. Marchetti applied the finishing touch to a breakaway in the fifth minute, following his own shot after Oak Hill goalkeeper Cody Plourde (10 saves) sprawled out to stop the initial bid.
“I think that was a big one to give us some momentum and confidence to play with,” Marchetti said.
“We talked about not coming out flat, and we came out flat and never recovered,” said Fletcher. “It opened up a can of worms.”
From there, the few times Oak Hill’s defense left the door open a crack, Camden Hills kicked it down.
Fullback Taylor Williams gave the Windjammers a 2-0 lead with under nine minutes remaining in the half, blasting a low line drive from beyond 20 yards after Malcolm Steele hustled to keep the ball in the Raiders’ defensive end.
Jimmy Weferling connected from roughly the same distance when an Oak Hill defensive lapse left the senior staring down an open net at 14:55 of the second half.
Steele, Williams, Marchetti, Brad Hall and Sam Vail led stifling Camden Hills defense that kept Oak Hill shooters Adam Soucy, Cody Fortier, Zach Lennett and Sean Adams in check.
Camden Hills sophomore goalie Ian Cushing made his toughest save of the day against Soucy to preserve the shutout with four minutes left.
“They’ve put up a lot of numbers, and we got the shutout, which was our goal,” said Camden Hills coach Michael Grey. “They’ve got some great strikers, so that in itself is a huge victory.”
Oak Hill’s cadre of defenders, led by Brian Bradstreet, Jake Samson, Ben Daggett, Adams and Tanner Lessard, helped slow down the explosive Windjammers for most of the second half.
The Raiders have a chance to break the three-game winless and shutout streaks when they hit the road to Belfast on Wednesday.
“We can’t play from behind. We’re not that deep,” Fletcher said. “We thought if we came out and played the physical brand of soccer of which we’re capable, we would be able to match them. But we didn’t match them in skill or with our physicality.”
