LEWISTON — Former St. Dom’s netminder Jamie Gilbert, who finished his college career last season at the University of Southern Maine, will get a chance to play professional hockey this fall.
Gilbert, who once also backed up Los Angeles Kings’ netminder Jonathan Quick at the University of Massachusetts, has a pair of tryouts lined up with teams in the Central Hockey League (CHL).
“I have a few options right now with Wichita and Texas, so we’ll see what happens in the next few days,” Gilbert said.
The Wichita Thunder told Gilbert that he has a chance to earn one of two goalie spots on the roster in a tryout in early October.
“They have their No. 1 set, and it will be me and another guy battling for one more spot,” Gilbert said.
But, that’s not the end of it. The Texas Brahmas, in the same league, have also told Gilbert they may be in the market for his services.
“They have two goalies signed, and one is at camp with the Houston Aeros (AHL),” Gilbert said. “If he sticks with them, they’ll call me to play with them. I should find that out within the next few days as the Aeros Camp makes decisions on players over the weekend. But for now, it is Wichita.”
Gilbert originally left Maine to play for the Cornwall Colts of the Ontario Junior League. From there, he was recruited to play at Massachusetts, but saw little time behind Quick. He then transferred to USM, where he became the team’s single-season and career leader in save percentage.
“I’m real excited to get this opportunity,” Gilbert said. “It has always been a dream of mine to play hockey professionally. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my hockey career, but, with a lot of hard work and determination, I was able to reach my goal. This is only the beginning. I am going to try and work my way up through the minor leagues.”
