NEW GLOUCESTER — The New Gloucester Fair opened today and in spite of the fact that it had to be set ahead one day on account of the rain, the attendance was larger than the first day last year. In fact, it was almost considered a record breaker. The people began arriving early in the morning and in every way the fair went off successfully.

An 18-year-old Lewiston man was arrested for kidnapping Friday night, but the charges were quickly dropped when the alleged victim said she had accompanied him willingly.

The incident began at 10:30 a.m. when the principal of Walton School in Auburn reported that a 15-year-old girl had been forcibly removed from the school.

The pair were located shortly after 6 p.m. at the man’s apartment on Bates Street in Lewiston, where he was placed under arrest.

After they were taken to Auburn, the girl said she had gone with the man willingly, and the charges were dropped.
