LEWISTON — A woman found dead in her South Portland apartment was a former Fayette resident convicted of burning down her family’s home in 2003.

The body of Alyssa Jensen, 24, was discovered Monday during a sweep of the building by firefighters following a kitchen fire in another apartment.

Authorities do not believe her past crimes had any connection to Monday’s blaze or to her death.

“The fact that she was convicted previously was just a coincidence,” said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. “There’s no indication for investigators that this was suspicious.”

McCausland said Tuesday that the fire remained under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s Office. Jensen’s body was sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. He said additional tests had been ordered, including toxicology tests; a final cause of death determination could take up to six weeks.

Jensen pleaded guilty in 2004 to attempted murder and arson after she set her family’s home on fire in July 2003 while her parents and four siblings slept. At the time, the 18-year-old Jensen was staying in a travel camper outside the family’s home. All members of Jensen’s family survived the blaze, but her mother suffered minor burns to her feet.

Jensen was sentenced to five years in jail and six years of probation after being found incompetent to stand trial. Among the conditions of her probation, Jensen was required to receive continued psychiatric counseling and treatment, to have no contact with her family and to not live in any town where any family member resided. She was also not allowed within 3 miles of her family’s Fayette home.

According to the WCSH-6 Web site, the apartment building where Jensen’s body was found provides residential mental health services for adults.
