100 years ago, 1909

Respondent after respondent who faced Judge Spear in the Supreme Court at Auburn Thursday afternoon for sentence was only a mere boy. The youngest, Odilon Bellemare, 13, was charged with breaking, entering and larceny. The lad’s case was continued. Others, however, were not dealt with so leniently, Two boys, both under 18 years of age, were sent to state prison for three years. Their crime was also breaking, entering and larceny, and it was with them that young Bellemare has been associated in felonious proceedings.

50 years ago, 1959

With Hurricane Gracie churning up the Atlantic Coast with her huffin’ and a puffin,’ a check of the Geiger Bros. Farmers’ Almanac reveals that the Lewiston weather prognosticators hit the weather nail just about on the head.

The Geiger almanac, prepared way back last year, lists a prediction of “Stormy in the Atlantic Coast states” for the period between Sept. 28 and Sept.30.

It was on Sept. 28 that Gracie became a big threat to the Atlantic Coast states.

25 years ago, 1984

A preventative health series is in the preproduction stage at WCBB-TV in Lewiston.

WCBB producer France Shea plans to “present the facts, explain different approaches and explore various alternatives” to personal health in the series, and she will stress prevention.

A steering committee of Maine health professionals has been working with Ms. Shea to develop ideas and outlines for the series, and topic suggestions by the public will be welcome.
