NORWAY — The book “Maine Feldspar, Families and Feuds: Oxford County Mining History” will be the topic of a talk by its editor and author, Vandall King, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Norway Memorial Library.

The public is welcome to attend the talk titled “Untold Historical Stories about Oxford County Mining.” King is a native of Skowhegan and a graduate in geology from the University of Maine and the State University of New York. He has studied and written extensively on Maine mineralogy.

The text of the book is heavily focused on information about and the history of local mining and especially the feldspar industry that was the backbone of the local economy in the early part of the 20th century. Chapters in the book also include Laura Wiley Ashton’s recollections of growing up in a mining construction family, a five-page account of the Lynchville intersection sign and an account of the impact of the Great Depression on local finances and families.

King’s talk will include material on the history of gem mining in Oxford County as well as information on native and visiting naturalists and scientists who were part of the people history of the industry. Other people that King will mention include the leaders and politicians connected to Oxford County mining. He will also show slides.
