LEWISTON —
The Center for Wisdom’s Women, formerly known as Wisdom’s Center, a drop-in center for women which re-opened one year ago, has now raised enough support to expand hours and programming and hire an Executive Director. The center, located at 97 Blake St., will now be open from 9 a.m. to noon weekdays; until 3 p.m. Mondays. Other afternoons will be added in the future.
A first-year anniversary celebration and open house is planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, with a rain date of Oct. 25. It will be a “Fall Fest Celebration” of, by and for women. Area agencies that support women are being invited to be present with display tables. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided. The public is invited to participate in the celebration, which will be held outside in the center’s parking lot.
Wisdom’s Center saw usage rise each of its nine years of operation with a total of 1,000 individual women served and more than 22,000 visits logged. Since reopening last November, The Center for Wisdom’s Women has logged 1,214 visits, with 56 women being new guests. In the last year, 20 volunteers have given approximately 960 hours of their time.
The mission of The Center for Wisdom’s Women, the only place of its kind in Maine, provides a sacred and safe place that supports and empowers women. The center offers warm hospitality, compassionate listening, personal and spiritual guidance that is respectful of all faith traditions, assistance in accessing local resources to meet needs and encouragement toward healthy life choices. Through support groups, activities and programs, women have the chance to meet and network with others, build friendships and support each other in their daily struggles.
Donations can be sent to The Center for Wisdom’s Women, P.O. Box 1016, Lewiston. Checks should be written to Trinity Church/Wisdom.
