Henry F. Bowers

1937 – 2009

AUBURN — Henry F. Bowers, 72, passed away Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Hospice House surrounded by his family. He was born April 25, 1937, in Royalston, Mass., and moved to Maine at the age of 10 with his father Henry F. Bowers Sr. and stepmother Janet S. Bowers.

He attended Gould Academy and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1956.

On Sept. 2, 1962, he married the former Eva G. Harlow in Woodstock. Together, they built their own home on Twitchell Pond in Greenwood, where they resided for 47 years. Henry was employed at EKCO Wood Products in Locke Mills for many years, and then started his own business of home care-taking, trucking and snowplowing. Even after the onset of disability in 1993 due to declining health, he persisted in working part-time out of his commitment to the well-being of his customers.

He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and snowmobiling and was a devoted Red Sox baseball fan. He was known for his love of German Shepherd dogs and was usually seen with one by his side wherever he went. He enjoyed family time and reunions, especially gatherings that were held outdoors.

Henry is survived by his wife, Eva, of Greenwood; two daughters, Brenda Torres and husband, Rick, of Princeton, Mass., and Maria Leonard and husband, Matthew, of South Portland; a grandson, Tyler Henry Light of South Portland; a foster granddaughter, Jennifer Zawalick of Worcester, Mass.; a sister, Amanda Bowers of Rumford; step brother, Richard Hutchins, of Rumford; cousins in Royalston, Mass.; and many lifelong friends.
