RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Richmond’s new professional baseball team should have a nickname by Oct. 15.

About 6,000 suggestions were submitted during a recent nominating process. Todd Parnell, the team’s vice president and chief operating officer, says many of the suggestions were related to birds, fish and other wildlife, although some are currently being used by other organizations.

Parnell says the list will be reduced this week to five finalists by front-office staff.

The Richmond team is formerly the Connecticut Defenders of the Eastern League. The team is a Class AA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants and will play at The Diamond, which is owned and operated by the Richmond Metropolitan Authority.
