Carolyn L. Baird
1948 – 2009
AUBURN — Carolyn L. Baird, 60, of 880 Minot Ave., went home to be with the Lord, peacefully in her sleep, on Sunday, Oct. 4, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.
She was born in Lewiston, Oct. 22, 1948, the daughter of Frederick Sr. and Doris (Strout) Gagne. She attended schools in Mechanic Falls, graduating from Mechanic Falls High School, Class of 1966. On July 27, 1968, she married her lifelong love, Brian Baird. Together they shared many wonderful years as husband and wife.
Upon graduating from high school, she worked several years as a meat wrapper at Shaw’s Supermarket. She then went on to attend hairdressing school at Bernard’s School of Beauty in Lewiston. Upon graduation, she worked several years at Madeline’s Salon in Lewiston, before opening her own business, known as Carol’s Snip and Curl. After many successful years, she sold her business to fulfill her lifetime dream of becoming a mother.
In December 1983, her dream became a reality when she and husband Brian adopted their son Jeffrey Kavin from India. Two and a half years later in July 1986, the family welcomed daughter, Bethany Kalinda, also from India. She nurtured her children and provided wonderful, loving care despite the severity of her illness.
She enjoyed many hobbies, but the passion and joy of her life were her husband and children. Together they shared many wonderful memories including camping at Little Field Beaches, holidays, birthdays and many family trips.
As her illness progressed, many activities became impossible for her to do. Even so, she never lost her zest for life. She was always ready to catch a movie, go out to dinner or do a little shopping. She brought much inspiration to those around her with her positive and happy spirit. Over a year ago, the family grew when Bethany brought home a small lap dog named Beckett. Carol adored the dog and referred to him as her grandson. He offered her much comfort and she enjoyed spoiling him with treats, toys and clothes.
The joy and love she showed in her life came from knowing Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior.
In 1992, she and her husband became members of Auburn Baptist Church, where she worshipped and served the Lord. She was blessed and strengthened by all her many Christian friends that she had in her life.
She leaves her devoted husband, with whom she shared 41 years of marriage, Brian Baird; her son, Jeffrey K. Baird; her daughter, Bethany K. Baird; her parents, Frederick Sr. and Doris Gagne; her mother-in-law, Avis M. Baird; a brother, Frederick Gagne Jr. and wife, Joyce; a sister, Irene Gagne and partner, Brian Pelletier; a sister, Paulette Tripp and partner, Rick Jackson; her sister-in-law, Judith Baird; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her father-in-law, James J. Baird; a brother, Stephen Gagne; a brother-in-law, Milton J. Baird; her grandparents; aunts, uncles; and a nephew.
The family wishes to thank all the caregivers who made it possible for Carol to enjoy her last years in the comfort of her home. A special thank-you to Lindsay and Bonnie for making the last year of her life especially enjoyable, filling her with much happiness and laughter.
Thank you for being such a loving wife and mother. You are loved and will be greatly missed. We promise to take care of each other, as you did us, until we are reunited together again one day.
