RUMFORD — Again this year the Rumford satellite walk of the Central and Western Maine Heart Walk was a success. More than $10,000 was turned at the walk on Sept. 27. The American Heart Association will have a final tally in a few weeks. The Rumford Hospital team alone raised more than $3200.

About 150 people converged on Hosmer Field to support the Heart Walk. Ten pets answered doberman Luka Worthley’s challenge, raising more than $700 and Luka raised $300, winning the pet prize. Next in line was cat Merlin Dolloff with $182. The third Rumford Hospital team pet, akita Kami Poisson, brought in $125.

In addition to the Rumford Hospital team of 50 walkers, Bangor Savings Bank with 11 walkers; Becky’s Heart Beats (a friends and family team) with nine; Brian’s Bistro, three; Community Energy, 20; Curves, two; Dead River Co., four; Franklin Savings Bank, 13; Hannaford, two; Marden’s, two; Med-Care, six; Mountain View Eyecare, two; Oxford Federal Credit Union, six; River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, nine; Region 9, seven; Stone Wall Springer Spaniels, two; Sunday River, one; Victorian Villa, 11; and Berlin Wal-Mart, eight, all fielded teams.

A new award this year for extensive lifestyle change was awarded to Steve Ellis who, according to his nominator, is a real hero.

Members of the core committee that put everything in place for the walk were Janet Brennick, Bangor Savings; Jane Bubar, Rumford Hospital; Sharon Gates, Rumford Hospital; Laurieann Milligan, Med-Care Ambulance; Sandy Palmer, River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition; Linda Westleigh, Franklin Savings; and Rose Marie Woods, Community Energy.
