WILTON — About a dozen Wilton firefighters spent Monday showing students the methods and apparatus needed to fight fires on the first day of Fire Prevention Week.

Approximately 160 students ranging from preschool to second grade came by classes to watch, listen and learn as the firefighters demonstrated skills the children might need such as calling 911 or techniques like drop and roll while in a fire.

The firefighters also gave demonstrations that included putting on their gear to respond to a call and rescuing a “downed firefighter” as they follow the fire hose into a cramped stairway and pull him through a culvert to safety.

Dressed in his gear, Sean Estabrook crawled through the group of children as fire Chief Sonny Dunham told the children that although the gear may look frightening it’s not meant to scare but to help. Eastabrook was crawling on the floor away from the heat, Dunham said.

The firefighters went through a drill of getting a call, donning their gear and pulling the truck out of the station. They then sprayed water across the road showing the children how the truck worked.

On Monday afternoon, first grade students and teachers Lisa Gagnon and Diane Kyes from Cushing School went through the firefighters presentation.
