William Arthur Knight
1927 – 2009

CANTON — William Arthur Knight, 82, of Rumford, passed away on Oct. 3, at the Victorian Villa Living Center.

He was born on Feb. 20, 1927, in Rumford, the son of Ralph and Rachel Knight. He graduated from Stephens High School, Class of 1945 and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway. In 1951, he married Muriel Hanington. A lifelong resident of Rumford/Mexico, he worked in the shipping department of the Oxford Paper Co./Boise Cascade Paper Mill.

An avid hunter, his greatest enjoyment was to be in the Maine woods pursuing his quarry. As a young man, he was a member of the local rifle club. He was a talented amateur photographer and also enjoyed playing chess and listening to music.

He is survived by his son, Kirby Knight and his wife, Tammy, of Clinton; three daughters, Brenda Elliott and her husband, David, of Windham, Shelley Dorr and her husband, Harold, of Winthrop and Stacey Knight of North Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Denis Knight and wife, Adrienne, of Little Falls, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren, Mitch, Shawn, Amber, Dawn, Jennifer, Justin, Rosie, Peter and Lindsey.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Muriel; and sisters, Rita Belden of Mount Vernon, N.H., and Evelyn Arsenault of Rumford.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the Victorian Villa for the care and compassion given to Arthur during his stay there.
