AUBURN — Police said a medical condition may have caused a Lisbon man’s car to cross the centerline on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge on Wednesday morning and strike three other vehicles.

Arthur Hechtl, 72, was in critical condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston hospital after his Dodge Intrepid crossed from the Lewiston-bound to Auburn-bound side of the road where it struck three other vehicles.

Two dogs inside Hechtl’s car were not hurt. Police said it did not appear that the dogs contributed to the crash.

The other drivers involved were identified as 38-year-old Cathy Beckwith, 70-year-old Joan Dehetre and 84-year-old Rene Theriault, all of Lewiston, police said. They suffered minor or no injuries, police said.

The 9 a.m. pileup forced the closure of the Auburn-bound lanes as emergency crews responded and police began an investigation.
