100 years ago, 1909

The story of the latest melodrama success, “Deadwood Dick’s Last Shot,” which comes to the Empire this afternoon and evening, is out of the ordinary. The play is by Owen Davis and is in four acts and eight scenes, with the locale among the picturesque lowlands, canyons, valleys and trails of California, a country made famous by Bret Harte and other noted writers. The play abounds in comedy.

50 years ago, 1959

The L.&A. Bowling Alleys at 8 Ash St., Lewiston, has been leased by Leo J. and Loretta Cyr of Lewiston. Mrs. Cyr is the former Twin City and state women’s bowling champion.

The couple has taken over the operation of the alleys from Remi H. and Josephine Labbe, now of Miramar, Fla. A five-year lease was given to  he Cyrs, with an option to purchase the bowling alley. The layout includes 10 bowling alleys and a luncheonette.

25 years ago, 1984

Mayor Alfred A. Plourde on Thursday charged a 20-member committee with developing a five-year plan for the Lewiston Public Library.

Twelve citizens, one city councilor, three library trustees and four library staff members will gather next Thursday at City Hall to begin developing long-term goals and objectives for the library, Library Director Richard Speer announced.

The committee will meet monthly until June to collect information and to review actions taken by other libraries in recent years. A tentative schedule calls for the development of a role statement by March and the adoption of goals by June.
