ORONO (AP) — The University of Maine men’s hockey team will be without two players when it opens its season Friday at Union College.

Coach Tim Whitehead said sophomore goalie Scott Darling and sophomore defenseman Ryan Hegarty have been suspended for violating the school’s student-athlete code of conduct. Darling is suspended for two games and Hegarty is suspended for three games.

Whitehead tells the Portland Press Herald that the suspensions stem from incidents last spring, but he would not elaborate.

The Black Bears travel to Schnectady, N.Y., for games Friday and Saturday at Union. Maine had a 13-22-4 record last year, while Union had a 19-17-13 mark.
