SOUTH PARIS — Sustainable Oxford Hills has announced a mobilization of the resourcefulness and creativity of Oxford Hills people engaged in preparations for dealing with new sources of energy and changing climate patterns. The setting will be Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday Oct. 24. Talks, discussion, demonstrations, exhibits and films will continue throughout the day.
Sustainable Oxford Hills is a group of local people who have been examining ways to inform citizens concerning “the transition to a lower fossil fuel future” and encouraging them toward action.
Preparations for the Oct. 24 event have intensified, said coordinator Connie Allen who added that planning meetings are taking place weekly. Those interested may join the meetings, held at 4 p.m. Wednesdays, at the Fare Share Commons, Main Street, Norway.
Allen said that the local effort is part of a global campaign known as the “International Transition Network,” or informally in the United States as the “Transition Towns” project.
Sustainable Oxford Hills chose the Oct. 24 date for its event because the organization 350.org designated that day as a worldwide “Day of Action,” when “a coalition of hundreds of organizations committed to [a] vision of a more sustainable world,” will be assembling worldwide, according to the organization’s Web site.
Studies by NASA climatologist James Hanson and colleagues show that unless atmospheric carbon is reduced to less than 350 parts per million, no longer will there be a planet “similar to the one on which civilization developed and to which life on earth is adapted.”
The event will include exhibitors and vendors showing off energy saving ideas, products and services. Workshops and discussion sessions will cover local foods and composting, wind and solar power generating devices, home energy assessments and green jobs.
