Recently I went by the Unitarian Church in Auburn and saw a large banner proclaiming support for equality for all in America, including for gay and lesbian citizens. It made me very proud to be a Unitarian.

I thought about when I was young and how the laws then prohibited people of different races from marrying. In those days, as now, the Bible was misused to support those unjust laws.

The laws were clearly not expressions of religious belief but, rather, of prejudicial intolerance.

Support for Question One is the same.

Bigotry turned into law has no place in this beautiful state of Maine.

I try to follow the Golden Rule in my interactions with others. Just as I wouldn’t like to be prevented from marrying someone I love because I’m heterosexual, I wouldn’t think of denying the same right to someone else because they are gay.

So, people can follow the Golden Rule and vote “no” on Question One, or they can take the un-American and un-Christian path of bigotry and vote otherwise.
