LEWISTON — Maybe pink just isn’t their color.

With their largest crowd of the season and a rink decked out in pink in an effort to raise money for breast cancer research, the Lewiston Maineiacs faded as quickly as the dye in the ice Saturday night, suffering their first home loss of the season in a 5-1 setback to the league-leading Drummondville Voltigeurs in front of 2,844 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

“We’re not going to win anytime we play like we did tonight,” Lewiston coach Don MacAdam said. “We really struggled with net-front protection, we left (goalie Adrien) Lemay all by himself. The last four goals, the guys were wide open in front, all alone in front.”

The Maineiacs wore special pink jerseys Saturday, both goalies and defenseman Eric Bonawitz sported pink sticks during warmups and the Colisee staff dyed the ice pink as the team raised funds for breast cancer research. That’s just about as festive as the night would get for the Maineiacs, who are now 6-1 in seven home games.

“We had a good run at home, and now we have to start all over again,” MacAdam said.

Drummondville, meanwhile, got the revenge it was looking for. The Volts, who lead the league with 23 points in just 13 games played, had just one regulation loss and one loss in extra time on their record, including a 5-4 shootout loss to Lewiston at the Colisee earlier this season.

“The last time, we came in here and got the lead, and thought it was over after that,” Drummondville coach Mario Duhamel. “I think we started a bit slowly tonight, our legs weren’t there, but we worked hard all night this time.”

Antoine Tardif stopped 23 shots for the Volts, while Gabrielle Dumont and Sean Couturier recorded two points each in the victory.

On the other end, Lemay was again stellar for the Maineiacs despite the loss, keeping a lackadaisical Lewiston squad in the game into the third period. Lemay finished with 36 saves on 41 shots, most of those coming in a lopsided third period.

“We didn;t give him any support tonight, he was all alone way too much,” MacAdam said.

Ryan McKiernan potted his first goal of the season for the Volts on the back end of a sequence of three abbreviated power plays to put Drummondville on top 1-0 at 10:55 of the opening frame. McKiernan’s shot floated off his stick from the right point, sailed through traffic and wobbled past Lemay’s glove into the top corner.

The Maineiacs had three solid chances of their own in the first, twice hitting the post behind Tardif, but the puck never crossed the line.

Lewiston did tickle the twine early in the second to even things back up. Eric Gelinas rammed his man hard into the boards to the right of Lemay and fed Pier-Olivier Morin through center. Morin sped into the zone and fired a wrister that hobbled McKiernan. The puck came back to Morin, who slid it to Beaton on the right side of the cage. Beaton toe-dragged the puck to his left and roofed it over Tardif.

Like Lewiston in the first, Drummondville hit a pair of posts in the second. The last post prompted Lemay, at the next stoppage, to skate to his left post and rub it with his glove hand.

Lewiston also played with fire in the middle frame, sending Drummondville to five power plays — some more abbreviated than others — but the Maineiacs killed them all, drawing a cheer from the crowd as the buzzer sounded.

It was just about the last big cheer from the crowd, as Drummondville took over in the final frame, outshooting Lewiston 21-5 and outscoring the Maineiacs 4-0.

Lewiston’s next two games are on the road, Thursday in Victoriaville and Friday in Shawinigan, and the Maineiacs next skate at home in a pair of games against Val d’Or on Oct. 30 and 31.
