AUBURN — Donald K. Keene Sr., 84, of West Poland, died Saturday at Clover Health Care Center.
He was born in Poland on Feb. 17, 1925, the son of Wilbur and Dora Tripp Keene.
He attended school in Poland and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School. He faithfully served his country in the Army during WWII in the 209th combat engineering battalion. He also served with Merrill’s Marauders in India. While in the service, he received the bronze star and purple heart. He later attended New York City College to become an electrician. He worked as a plant electrician at Wilner Wood Products for 39 years.
Don was a member of the Floyd-Harlow VFW Post #9787, American Legion Post # 112, The Military Order of the Purple Heart, past Master of Tyrian Lodge #73 A.F. & A.M., past High Priest of St. Andrews Royal Arch Chapter, past Illustrious Master of the Council, R. & S.M., and a member of the Kora Temple.
On Feb. 18, 1944, he married Ellen H. Farr, who predeceased him on July 21, 2005.
Don is survived by two sons, Donald Jr. of Cumberland, and Vance and his wife, Joan, of Auburn; a sister, Betty Stone and her husband, Aldrof, of Minot; five grandchildren, Jonathan Keene, Ellen County, Kelly Marston, Peter Keene and Christian Keene; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
