A 60-foot silo containing 800 tons of corn crashed to the ground Wednesday afternoon, hours after an Auburn dairy farmer had attempted to repair it.
Alfred Libby of Harmon’s Corner Road said he may have been able to save the storage tower had he made repairs on Tuesday.
“I noticed it leaning Sunday afternoon, and once it commenced to tilting, it just kept on going.” said Libby Wednesday night.
He believes acid in the corn and grass stored in the silo over the years eroded the blocks more than he had suspected, and when this year’s load settled to one side, the structure collapsed.
