LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine will offer a free women’s self defense class as part of YWCA Week without Violence. The class is for women 16 years old and older (minors must have a parent sign a permission and waiver form for them). The class will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21.

“This class will include basic self-defense maneuvers against an attacker including how one’s body, mind and spirit can be used as ones defense. As a woman and martial artist; it is my ambition to give others the skills necessary for one to empower oneself,” said Aaron K. Lewis, owner and operator of Jasper’s Martial Arts in Sabattus, who will facilitate the class.

Lewis specializes in teaching Shotokan Karate and Kodokan Judo. Her prior teaching experience includes classes at the Multi-Purpose Center and the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. She has more than 26 years experience in practicing martial arts including teaching, hosting tournaments and international competitions as well as participating in practice classes abroad.

The free class will take place in the gym at the YWCA, 130 East Ave.

Limited space is available. Register by calling Kayt DeMerchant, director of marketing and hallmark programming at YWCA of Central Maine at 795-4050 or via e-mail at kaytdemerchant@gmail.com.
