100 years ago, 1909

A 2-month-old child living in Lewiston was recently attacked by a large and vicious rodent and quite badly gnawed.

The child was sleeping at the time and the rat, which is said to have been nearly as large as a fair-sized cat, leaped upon the bed and began ferociously gnawing the flesh from the child’s tiny fingers.

Members of the family, called by the cries of the frightened baby, drove the rat away. While the injuries are not serious, it is feared that blood poisoning may develop.

50 years ago, 1959

The Lewiston-Auburn Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals re-elected Ralph B. Whittum of Auburn to another term as president during its annual meeting last night.

Besides the election of officers, directors and honorary directors, the organization made plans for the coming year’s program and heard talks from several guests.

25 years ago, 1984

The Pine Tree Warriors are starting a new cadet drum and bugle corps and color guard for 9 to 13-year-olds. 

Warrior Chairman Bert Dutil said no experience is necessary and the Warriors furnish instruments, uniforms and equipment. Instruments include soprano, baritone and contra bass bugle, snare drum, triple drum, base drum, cymbals and bells.

Color guard members handle flags or rifles.
