HENNIKER, N.H. — An early goal by Samantha Escobar stood up as the
game-winner for New England College in a hard-fought, non-conference
1-0 victory over Bates in field hockey action Wednesday.
New England College forward Samantha Escobar scored
the lone goal of the game at the 8:09 mark, tip-in a shot from
Khatianna Evans helping lift the host Pilgrims to 10-5
overall, while the loss drops the Bobcats to 1-9.
NEC had several scoring opportunities throughout the opening half,
outshooting the Bobcats 5-2 and holding a 7-2 advantage in penalty
corner opportunities.
Bates’ best scoring chance came as the clock expired with two shots
on net off a penalty corner, but Pilgrim keeper Mary Roux made the saves to keep the Bobcats off the board.
The Pilgrims finished the game outshooting the Bobcats 13-8 and held
on to an 11-8 advantage in corners.

Amherst 3, Bates 0
AMHERST, Mass. — The Bates College men’s soccer team hung in with one
of the top teams in the region on Wednesday, before host Amherst
College pulled away from a scoreless tie at halftime for a 3-0 NESCAC
conference victory.
After an evenly matched first half, senior co-captain Matt Lewis put
his team on the scoreboard with his third goal of the season in the
55th minute. Sophomore James Mooney and first-year Spencer Noon added
insurance goals for Amherst (9-2-0) in the 70th and 75th minutes, respectively.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lennard Kovacs made three saves to earn his
seventh shutout of the season, while sophomores Greg Watts and Brian Goldberg each made two saves for the Bobcats (3-7-2).
